San Francisco Bay Area -- "It can take as long as two years to help a homeless man or woman to recover from homelessness and gain the skills they need to become productive citizens. That is the hard work we do every day at the Bay Area Rescue Mission," states Mission CEO, Rev. John M. Anderson.
"But the work we do, helping people to change their lives, truly is a labor of love. We know that every life we invest in has the potential to succeed in the workplace, ultimately making the Bay Area a better place for us all."
Odale Thomas had migrated from city to city and job to job. He was unable to hold down one position for very long. Drugs and alcohol controlled his life. In and out of jail, Odale became homeless. Finally, a case worker recommended that Odale go to the Bay Area Rescue Mission.
Shared Thomas, "I knew I needed help. I came to the Mission just to get a night's sleep, but found out that the Mission specializes in helping people regain their lives. I not only graduated from the Mission's recovery program, but have obtained my High School Diploma and received my AA in Culinary Services from Contra Costa College. In fact, I won a scholarship to tour China last year, and this year, a scholarship to tour Italy and learn about world class culinary techniques.
"What's more, I am clean and sober and I have my family back in my life. What an amazing transformation the Mission has made in my life!"
Added Rev. Anderson, "This Labor Day, as we recognize those who work hard to make our nation strong, let's take a moment to consider those who work hard to help people transform their lives."
Every day at the Bay Area Rescue Mission, 325 homeless men, women and children find shelter. More than 5,000 are fed. And thousands like Odale Thomas have the opportunity to rebuild their lives.
