Bay Area Non-Profit President/CEO Honored with National Lifetime Achievement Award

Richmond, California … On June 1st , 2017, Rev. John M. Anderson, President/CEO of the Bay Area Rescue Mission received the Russ Reid Award for Lifetime Achievement from the national Association of Gospel Rescue Missions Conference in Dallas, Texas.

Rev. Anderson was recognized for his 35 years of helping the homeless to overcome their circumstances that devastated their lives.

“Being involved in Rescue Mission ministry has truly been one of the greatest blessings of my life,” states Anderson. “In the early 1980’s I had a great job, owned my own consulting company, and thought I had everything that I wanted. Everything except contentment, fulfillment and purpose.

“But I lost it all and became homeless when I turned to drugs. In October of 1982 I wondered into the San Diego Rescue Mission. During the next three months I lived on the streets in San
Diego, barely surviving. San Diego Rescue Mission provided me with a daily meal and occasional nights in their emergency shelter.

“But on January 17, 1983, God dramatically changed my life. Eight years later, I became the Executive Director of the San Diego Rescue Mission. In 1993, I was given the opportunity to move to Richmond, California and continue to help the homeless and impoverished people of the San Francisco Bay Area. Since January of 2000, I have served as the President/CEO of the Bay Area Rescue Mission.”

The Bay Area Rescue Mission provides more than 2,500 meals every day and 250 beds every night in addition to a variety of programs which help the homeless to change their lives.

The Russ Reid Award for Life-Time Achievement is named for the founder of the Russ Reid Corporation. Reid was a long-time supporter and member of the Board of Trustees of the Association of Gospel Rescue Missions (AGRM). Headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the AGRM was founded in 1913 and is North America’s oldest and largest network of independent Christian crisis centers that are dedicated to helping America’s homeless population. AGRM exists to proclaim the passion of Jesus Christ toward those who are homeless, hungry, abused and addicted. Rescue Missions offer radical hospitality in Jesus’ name.

The Bay Area Rescue Mission, founded in 1965, is one of Northern California’s largest privately funded nonprofit ministries dedicated to helping the homeless and those in-need. To help them care for the homeless and hungry, visit
