UPS Awards a National Challenge Grant
to the Bay Area Rescue Mission

UPS employees are top givers in the nation to the United Way for the seventh year in a row! And recently, a local team of UPS executives led by Roddrick Lee, Director of Community Affairs for UPS, went to bat for the Bay Area Rescue Mission , helping to draft a winning proposal submitted to the National UPS Foundation, that resulted in  $76,350 to purchase a mobile kitchen and van for “Food Rescue.”

At an awards ceremony at the UPS North Bay Building on Friday, January 19, 2007, Tom Dalton, VP of the UPS East Bay District said that UPS was “proud to partner with the Bay Area Rescue Mission in helping to meet the needs of our community. UPS employees see not only the good side of town, but also pick up and deliver items to some that are not-so-good. And UPS is committed to making a positive impact.”

The grant will be used for the Mission's Mobile Outreach Program which visits the homeless in local parks and areas where the less fortunate congregate. Staff and volunteers then offer food, blankets and even a ride back to the Mission to help these impoverished individuals. The grant will also purchase a mobile kitchen in order to bring food and hope to needy neighborhoods.

Said Mission President/CEO, John Anderson to the UPS Employees, “We are honored that our proposal was accepted, as it was chosen as only one of 10 national awards. UPS is a remarkable company, and UPS employees are compassionate people who want to offer hope and real help to the hungry, homeless and hurting. This grant represents an outpouring of that compassion. It’s exciting to think about the increased volunteer opportunities this affords us in partnering with UPS employees and others, as we take the message of hope for a brighter tomorrow to the men, women and children struggling to survive on the streets of our greater Bay Area. We thank God for UPS!”
